Hello, can anyone give me a rough guide on when a timing chain should be replaced and what the possible cost might be? Or is it just a case of when I hear the dreaded noise from the engine, and hope I make it to a garage before it's to late????

Not a thought that should be crossing your mind on a 2009 vehicle.

Not a thought that would be crossing my mind on a 1989 vehicle. Only thing I would be even slightly thinking about is the health of the chain tensioner that guides the chain as they're plastic in construction.

I recently removed the chain from a 1991 BMW and.... Reused it.......

Hope this makes clear of a few things
