Hi all i have had my e39 528i for about 2 weeks now

I just checked all tge fluid levels as i do every couple of weeks and noticed the water/coolant level was right down so i looked in the manual and it said top it up till the red fliat stick is level with filler cap

Now the problem there is no float stick so i just topped it up to about 3/4 the way up the tank

Is there a y common problems on the 528i e39 that cause water loss or could it just be its been low.for a while and noone ever checked it before?????

Temp gauge does not move past half way even after a blast on motorway she stays at a constant temp

Any ideas??????

Thanks

Are the heaters working fine? Just top it up and leave it alone for a week or so (with daily use of course), if its losing coolant and there are no puddles then the head gasket may be failing, but thats a worse case scenario! ;)

Heaters are amazing red hot and temp gauge ain't moved from half since topping it up get no puddles of lack of power or anything

Might be a leak bud. Wait for a dry day and keep your eyes peeled.

ALSOOOOOOO.... Might be a really bad air-lock. Get the front of the car up in the air THEN top up the coolant with the car running.

Air lock it was !

Air lock it was !

Was it......... ? ?

I may be off topic, but I had this in 2009 on my 523. The thermostat housing starts to get pin prick leaks, which are difficult to see. Over time they widen and then suddenly boom, the glycol system dumps and the M52 overheats rapidly.

Cost me a head gasket that one.

Bleeding is a convoluted but essential, affair of raising the front wheels, putting the climate control up to 32º while topping up normally and bleeding using the screw next to the radiator cap.

It took me a while to trust coolant system again after that.

Next job in a few weeks time is changing the VCG to get rid of that burning oil smell in the cabin
