I may come a drive down, not 100% I can deffo make it yet though. I'll try my best, and I have stickers :-)

There basically flaps that open and close on the inlet manifold. They open and let more air in when the car is idle. I think it's just an emission thing because blanking them off doesn't affect performance at all. They are little flat plates that pivot on a tiny pin, it's the pin that breaks and the flap gets sucked in and damage pistons.

Looks good mate. Get in touch with Snypa-d on here. He knows of a site that sells M3 reps, I brought some off ebay but they have corroded pretty bad, Daves are older than mine and still look mint.

Yes mate, get them blanked off asap! I had one sucked in on my 320d and it cost £1400 to repair!!!! Dread to think of the cost on a 6 cylinder.
