Hi Oliver...welcome to the Forum I would definitely get a second opinion on the diagnosis as it could be driveshaft, wheel bearing, brakes or just about anything else in the area after contacting the debris but can't say I have ever heard of a differential being affected by contacting road debris. Let us know how you get on with it
