check engine light has been on both bmws that ive owned e46 and e39

car starts fine from cold with just the check engine light on drives fine nice and smooth but turn off the ignition and re start the car and not only the check engine light comes on but also the eml light and the car goes into limp mode have changed the two sensors that were showing on the diagnostic computer but the problem persists and any help would be much appreciated.

starts and drives well from cold but when warmed up and restarted goes in to limp mode no knocking or rough sounds have changed the two sensors but the problem persists any help would be appreciated
