I assume you have connected an OBD Diagnostic scanner to the cars Diagnostic socket (OBD output) ?
First what scan tool are you using ? Next question what is happening with the car that prompted a scan?
If you are getting a a number of Faults it could well be a problem with the Can-bus system not communicating with the Control units on the car and the OBD socket. Problems can start often with poor earth connections (Check engine earth straps) BMW love multiple comb type earth points so a can of Electrical contact spray will be needed. They also make splices (joins) in the Bus system using a twisted compressed crimp, these start to corrode after time and cause poor communication between Control units. If you have INPA or ISTA there are wiring diagrams that will help trace where to look. Basically you are looking for a twisted pair of cables (often Green and Orange) they will be hidden in the main vehicle loom so a bit of digging detective work is needed attached are a couple of pictures from my own X5 The black you see is corrosion I remade these joins (soldered) and a whole load of issues disappeared there are several splice points around the car so a wiring diagram is essential
