Hi All,

I recently bought a 2008 (58 plate) X5 3.0D and have noticed an annoying "clunk" at the back end when I go over even the smallest bump. The son has had a listen whilst travelling and thinks it seems to be coming from the tailgate area! Any ideas?

If nothing inside the cab is obviously loose, its going to be suspension I would imagine

A clunk may suggest your shocks are not doing what they are supposed to do. Try to recreate the noise by pushing down on the rear of the car with your body weight. See what that reveals...

Edit: Welcome to the BMWOC matey

Thank you for your help DazH,

In addition I have picked up from elsewhere that a tailgate mis-alignment may be the cause of a back end noise. Are you aware of this issue?

Cheers.

More than likely bushes mate...

Whats the milage?

Welcome along

I'm not aware of this issue personally, No. If the noise is indeed how you described it, I can't imagine it being anything else than suspension. You said it's even over the smallest of bumps so the shocks have to deal with that!

Hi, i have exactly the same isue with my X5. I gave my mate who is a mechanic a lift the other day and before I mentioned anything he announced "you've got a droplink gone"!! He will be looking at it soon to identify what parts are needed so I will post details here,

cheers crofter

Hmmm doesnt sound like a drop link issue. If a drop link was gone, your steering would be erratic

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Gav, the mileage is barely 18,000 so pretty low really.

As I said the noise doesnt sound substantial and is more of a nuisance than anything else. Have booked it in to a local dealer for a week on Saturday so hopefully will have an update then. Meanwhile if there are any more theories then please feel free to post.

Cheers.
