iv bought an e39 bmw 520 and i drove it until petrol run out and put petrol again in it but it does not want to start does anyone have a clue why engine is turning and tryin to start but it dies again

When you run out of petrol, the fuel rail and pipes lose pressure. When you try to crank again, it takes quite a bit to prime them again.

If you have a weak battery, you may of ran it down priming the fuel system. Jump starting might be an idea...

the only real threat you have of damaging the car by letting the fuel completely deplete is the fuel pump being damaged. It is lubricated by the fuel so driving it without fuel running through it may damage it if it is already weak. Unliekly but the only theory I can think of...

there are many theorys and one of them often pokes it's head up. "Sucking gunk from the bottom of the tank when your fuel runs low". This is not exactly true as the fuel is taken from the bottom of the tank anyway. It may be worth changing your fuel filter for the sake of it though...
