Newbie Help Please! 530D Stiff Rear Suspension

Hi Gents

I'm new to this forum, I have recently bought a 530d touring and the rear suspension is really stiff and hard, the car rattles and is quite uncomfortable.

I know it's air and have checked the pump, it comes on and off if you bounce the car.

can anyone give me some pointers please as to what might be wrong, I'm sure it shouldn't be like this?
