C330I Sat Nav Issue - Please Help

Bought a 2002 BMW C330i today and the previous owner told me that the battery had run completly flat. This resulted in the SAT NAV not working (option does not come onto Menu screen). I know the previous owner and know the sat nav was working fine (I have actually seen it working).

The key fob also does not work (battery flat).

Are issues linked? What can I do to get the SAT NAV working. I have already ejected and re-inserted the disc a couple of times. I've been told to disconnect the battery, but don't have the tools to do this. But does disconnection really work?

I wonder if the issue is linked to the key fob not working...............
