right, i want to get my windows tinted but not entirely sure whether to do it or not!

1) will it make my insurance premiums go up? or can i get away with not telling them if i do it?

2) would you say it decreases/increases the risk of it being broken into (the film "apparently" makes it more challenging to get into as the glass won't just shatter into the car if smashed!!!)

3) what can i get away with without getting pulled by 5 0 every day?

4) should i do it at all?

oh and for those of you who don't know my car.........

I would only go for the back windows, rear and 2 sides, as 70% light has to shine through the glass, and the 5 0 carry gizmos to check for this.

If you go ahead with window tint, I would check with your insurance company as the car is being modified from the original spec before carrying out mod, as the premium might go up, if they say it makes no difference, get that in writing, as if any accident did occur, they might try and wriggle out of it.

Beemers will always be target cars for thieves, having a film of tint would not stop them, they would just bend the window frame on the door back to gain access.

with windows tinted you are more likely to be stopped by 5 0, if you do get it done go to a decent window tinting place, search on the web and look for reviews, cheapest way is to buy the window tint kit, but if you go wrong could work out dearer than having it done by professional shop.

Good Luck

thanks for your comments al. i think 1st on the agenda is talking to my insurer. as to the bending window frame....i don't have them as it's a coupe so they'll need to break the glass to get in no matter (not trying to sound flippant) what which was why i was thinking of the film making it more of a nuisance for them (maybe they'll do the easier car), i do not have anything in the car and definitely nothing on show.

i have got a number for a "tinter" fairly close to me that does alot of work for car sales and dealers etc, and was recommended by a work colleague, the price is "around" £200, is that about right? ta :D

You could still tint the fronts (not the screen tho ), with maybe half the shade...

i was thinking that actually. i didn't want a really dark tint so i was thinking a 70% on the front and 50% on rears. and i suppose it would look like it's been done within the legal requirements (by eye)

Hi,just for info,my e36 is 85% tint on rears and 65% tint on the fronts, which by law is illegal,as the max tint you are allowed is 15% on the fronts and unlimited on the rears. You can get stopped and given a Vehicle Defect Repair ticket for anything above 15% on the fronts which gives you 14days to rectify the fault and get an MOT man to stamp the form to be sent off,or given a 60 pound fine and be made to rip the tint off on the spot. So the choice is really yours !! Just be aware of what CAN happen,I know what Id do ;) and 200 quid for full tinting is about right I spose, but push for a discount :)
