I'm not help :(

I've never had a working fuel gauge in any of my cars I've ever owned so I'm used to learning how long I can drive my car before re-fuelling

I would agree with you Val, there could be dirt or other contamination in the potentiometer (sender), try lifting it out to notice this and see if it moves freely!

Failing that, it could be totalled, or even a dodgy connection somewhere... Maybe even the gauge?
