I have recently bought a 120D and it will no longer run, the car will start however the engine will only run for about 15 seconds before cutting out.

i first noticed a lot of blueish smoke from the exhaust but this seemed to come and go, I contacted the garage that I got the car from and they suggest that I take the car for a good run.

whilst I was out a run in the car, I noticed the DPF filter light flash on then off again, I suspected this was because on the smoke. However the car then went into limp mode and wouldn’t allow me to accelerate past 2000 rpm (at least this is what I thought) I then decided to turn around and head home, I pulled up in a lay-by and went to reverse back but the engine cut out, I thought I had stalled but it done this a couple of times, I then turned the car and went to pull away but there was no power at all, it was almost as if the accelerator was not connected, there was no revs at all, I pulled up at the side of the road, and proceeded to organise a toe (engine was still running) I then noticed a lot off smoke and I thought the engine was on fire, this turned out to be steam from the expansion tank, I turned the engine off and got out, just as I did this the pressure blew the cap off the expansion tank, and the engine will only run for a few seconds now.

i know this is a lot of info, but I haven’t seen a car have so many problems in one instance, any help would be much appreciated

Morning Connor

Doesn't sound good, the responsibility should be with the Garage you brought it from, so first port of call is them. If they are not helpful then you have the sale of goods act to fall back on, under the act you have the right to either have the car repaired or replaced or your money back.

Good Luck let us know how you get on
