Vanos Solenoids

Hey all (First post)

E87 116i n45 engine...
Took off alternator to have bearings replaced on it, whilst it was off decided to replace the leaking vanos solenoid o rings.
Now it's all back together the car at idle sounds like an old diesel van.
When turning on RPM goes from 0-1000 ish (as normal) and then will instantly lower to its idle RPM as normal which to this point all sounds fine, until it drops from the 1000RPM to the normal idle RPM of around 800RPM whole process lasts 1 or 2 seconds as normal in every car. Once it settles then the noise begins.
I noticed when putting them back in that they didn't seem to want to go "right" in however they were in really well and have the tender thumbs to prove it.
Once the rattle clunky noise started I shut it off immediately.
Hoping there is someone on here who could point me in right direction.
The only engine part I've touched are the two units, belt tensioner to get belt off and alternator.
I feel the alternator and belts are all on ok, though the socket did slip from the tensioner once and shot back back on itself...
Is it possible it could just be that the solenoids are not quite in?
Really appreciate any help!
Cheers
Lee
