New to forum and the car. Managed to pull off the gearknob when trying to engage reverse! Now the dashboard back lighting doesn't work. Any recommendations?

Illuminated gear knob?

Sounds like you've caused a short!!

Check for the wires that have touched, secure them, change the fuse, should be sorted!!

One other possibiity, I had this problem with my E30 & my Z3, the headlight pull can be rotated to increase the dash illuminations..... certain positions, the lights just cut out, rotate it & you might find it's all working!!

Fingers crossed for you!!

Hi Andyamn.

Thanks for your input. It's not an illmunated gear knob (unless it was originally supposed to be?!) Standard M spec option I believe.

There were wires underneather the gear knob - are those the ones whicch should be secured? What do they do? I have checked the relevant 4 fuses (those affecting the dashboard illumination as listed under the engine compartment fuse box cover). All appeared to be good.

I have read on another forum from someone changing their gear knob, that they had a short at the back of the light switch. Sadly twisting the light shitch dimmer/ rheostat makes no difference.

Think I'm going to have someone try/ fix the switch for me. No good at this stuff myself!

Thanks alot.
