Pixels Going On Dash Mileage Display

Hi,

I'm new to the site and have only just bought a 1997 728i - a beautiful car with only 72k mls and 2 owners. There are a few faults one in particular thats bothering me is the display bar in the dash binnacle that displays the trip mileage, milage and temperature etc. The pixels are about 50% gone making it difficult to read.

Is this something that is very difficult to repair yourself - and is it expensive to rectify ?

Also wondered if I should have the gearbox flushed and refilled with a specific gearbox oil. Do they have a pancake filter fitted that needs changing - I'm not familiar with the sealed for life units ??

I would say the dash speedo clock could do with a change.

as for the gearbox, its suppose to be a seal for life unit. however, owners do tend to change the fluid & also the filter.

personally if the car gears are shifting correct & smooth then I would not mess with the fluid.

check for leaks around the oil sump pan, the seal tends to leak.

Loads of companies that will repair any unit with burst pixels, just google it. As Dilly has said the fluid is for life bit its easy changed and new filters are available through BMW
