hi ppl just saying as I have never used this forum but also im new to bmw and im having trouble BIG TROUBLE I have just bought a 318i se fantastic car lovely thing however I have only had her for a few days and theirs a weird rattle coming from the top of the engine now I have searched hi and low for help of friends and no body seams to any idea what it may be im desperate for help as it sounds horrible it doesn't sound like the bottom end nocking I know that noise but on tic over sounds sweet soon as you rev her u can here it but it dies off after 2500 revs its baffled me can anybody help me please she sound terrible thank you for all your help I really really appreciate it

its a bit of a broad question, if u can get a video up of the rattle/noise then that could help viewers to comment in.

I could guess and advise you that it may be the hydraulic tappets making the noise - :ph34r:

Sounds like tappets, no pun intended. Not exactly the big trouble that you are thinking, hopefully, but get it sorted ASAP.

guys i found out today I think the bottom ends gone im so gutted its un real I love that bimmer she sounds like a tractor I just about got it to the garage does any one have an idea of how much it would cost to fix or would it be best to get a fresh engine ? thanks for the help guys

That is really bad news, Toby, really feel for you. Hopefully some others will reply, but my gut feeling is a replacement is the way to go, from a reputable source with a warranty.

Toby ALL IS NOT LOST... Drop the sump then the big-end caps, if the crank and con-rods are not scored badly then buy some shell bearings... Can be done with engine still in ;)
