  1. The white car in the front belongs to Jynx and is an E46 323i with ESS Supercharger. Plenty of power there. Got the prize for best E46.

Maguiars had a stand. There was an icecream van and a burger/chips stand, too.

  3. What do you do to secure your BMW against theives nicking your motor?

what would you recommend as a preventtive way to stop thieves in their tracks?

About 50 quid will buy you a GSM/GPS tracker, 80 hours of standby battery integrated. The device is standalone and you can then just stick a prepaid sim into it. It's configured by sending SMS to it entirely, so no need to get access to it, once it's installed. It's charged via USB, so a 12v to USB adapter is all you need to hardware it.

    Size of the yoke:

    tracker-front.jpg

    tracker-back.jpg

To the left a Nokia N85, to the right my GPS mouse (for comparison). The device is tiny and easy to hide somewhere. In the ROI, having the tracker even saves you a few bop on the insurance.

  4. Hi all (new member)

Can anybody help, my audio side of the display unit is not working (no red display) yet the sat nav and computer/tv is displayed on screen.

I have no display mode and no sound on screen. Can any body help please it is an E46 M3 and if it is a fuse can you advise which one as I haver no user manual.

    Many Thanks

There's a bunch of modules in the boot. Each individual of them represents a part of what you see on the display. The display itself is usually generated by the navigation drive or the video module, so that's why it's working.

It looks like your radio (BM24 or BM54 Professional) is dead. You might need to check the connectors, reseat them, check the fuse on the back of the radio (where the cable is attached) or worst case replace the radio module. They don't come cheap unfortunatly.

Here's a picture, where the radio is supposed to sit in the E39 (don't mind, that everything is bend, it's a picture from a crashed car):

    bm24-bracket.jpg

The unit has a sticker like this:

    bm24.jpg

Older ones are BM24, newer ones are BM54

If you have to buy a replacement unit, make sure you get one with the same connectors. The older ones had round pins, the newer ones square pins. There exist converter cables, but you might get the right thing in the first place.

I usually take a good few snaps. I'll post'em. Will hopefully have my two E39's up with me. The M5 went to the detailer yesterday.

  6. I have, 1 litre for every 500 miles, for my car. But I need more input.

My car is, 120k miles, 2000 reg.

I've got 150k miles (243000 km) on the clock and mine is a September '99 M5. The car uses about 1 liter per 1000 miles, but that's exceptionally little for the pre-facelift M5's.

I've heard anything around 500-700 miles per liter is acceptable and not unusual.

The reason for the oil consumption is the design of the piston rings. They have a bit play, so that they can cope with the heat that the engine archieves during driving. Like any other racing engine.

I've been doing a little reading, and it seems BM adressed this issue, at some stage during 2000, after which the oil consumption is siginifcantly reduced.

More like 1 litre every 5000 miles. Thats a lot better. Any info available on this, I've not found too much on the web besides what I've just typed.

Not really. I know a few people with post-facelift M5's and the oil consumption isn't that much better than pre-facelift M5's. The difference is, that they can use long-lasting oils (standard 5W30 i believe), while our pre-facelift (splits around September/October 2000) models require 10 TWS 30 motorsport oil, which is more expensive. BMW changed the piston rings in those engines.

The oil discussion has been ever ongoing on for example m5board and other places and if you want to keep your engine in good nick for a very long time, I can only recommend to stick with what BMW specified for your engine.

    That's all, really.

  7. l've just aquired a late E28 520i and l'm trying to find out when the last one was made via the chassis number ?

Wikipedia says, the E28 was manufactured from 1981 to 1988. Obviously some of those could be manufactured in 1988, but registered the first time in 1989. 722,328 were build.

I'm not sure, what specifically you're looking for though.

  8. Howdy,

just signed up here. Bit of a car nut and also had my fair share of contacts with BMW's throughout the years.

What got me interested originally, more than 15 years ago, was when a friend of mine bought an E28 518 as his first car. Well, it wasn't a 6-pot, but it was a quite nice BMW, even though it was poverty spec. I then a couple years later temporarily had a lend of an E30 325e (2.7l low-rpm engine), which I absolutely loved.

I'm from Denmark originally and after I moved to Ireland nearly 7 years ago, my first irish car was an E34 520i automatic. A few cars and vans inbetween that and two years ago, I found my way back to the bimmers in the form of an E39 525tds from '97.

The tds was traded for a '99 E39 M5 last year, which is my weekend and fun car:

Fortunatly one of the previous owners did a lot of the upgrades to the facelift model (like 16:9 display in the dash, angel eyes, etc.)

As of last month, also my daily driver is a BMW again. A '01 E39 525d Touring in Japan Red, which I'm currently upgrading to MSport spec:

    40069_421810293681_698008681_4945068_6705601_n.jpg

    40069_421810308681_698008681_4945071_956247_n.jpg

It came with cloth interiour, but I've already started replacing it with a sports leather interiour:

    40502_422439738681_698008681_4963063_640109_n.jpg

    40502_422439748681_698008681_4963064_2520993_n.jpg

The wood trim is going to be replaced with silver trim, similar to my M5 and a Msport steering wheel is also on the wishlist, but first the suspension and the headliner are going to be replaced.

I'm quite active on a few car related forums and might be knocking around here from time to time.
