  1. Thanks Dave, yeah everyday the secretary there gives me an update saying the updates are still going but its been 2 weeks now that they have been doing only updates. They got the new ecu from bmw and they have spoken with bmw techs a few times since they needed some new usb cables and some other things. I've spoken to a couple other people and everyone says the same thing, the update should take a day or 2 at the most. Should I ask them anything else specific to this issue to get more info? thanks a bunch, rick
  2. My 2016 m235i ECU broke and I took it in and my mechanic put in a new one but they have been updating/programing it for well over a week now. They say BMW has given them instructions and the updates are taking a very very long time. Is this normal? This is at least day 8 or 9 of them just doing the updating part. The car starts fine now so just the computer programs are left but can it really take this long? thanks
  3. Hello, my m235i wouldn't start so i took it in and they say i need a new ECU and a ISM. They are quoting me $4400. I have done car work in the past and feel comfortable doing this type of work but I haven't reprogrammed my BMW before so I was wondering if this is something I could attempt or is it better to just let them do it? Looks like the ECU costs around 2k and the ISM is about $200 so labor is going to be about half of this cost. I've seen a couple youtubes on this topic and it doesn't look that bad but I was hoping to get better info from someone with more experience. I don't mind paying the cost if the quote is accurate and the job is out of my league but in these situations i really like to do them myself especially if it means I can buy the tools i need for the job and I still save money compared to what I would have paid the mechanic. Thanks a bunch, rick
  4. Hello, my daughters borrowed my 2016 m235i and a few hours later said it wouldn't start. I towed it home and there are 3 errors on the console Fuel system malfunction, Chassis stabilization, Drivetrain malfunction. Seems strange to have no issues then have 3 all at once. I did change the battery and registered it since it was old. I have protools but just started using it so if anyone has advice on where to start I'd appreciate it. Also do i have to go under the car to put it in neutral in case i need to get it towed to the shop? thanks!
  5. Hello, last week my daughters borrowed my 2016 m235i convertible and they called me saying it won't start. When I got there i saw a couple errors about the drivetrain and another error about the fuel pump. The car has 40,000 miles and I've never had a problem with it. The display would come on and lights would work but it wouldn't start. I had it towed home. I tried to charge the battery with a battery charger but I got an error saying there was an error with the battery (I can't remember exactly the error but I never saw it before and it would happen within 10 minutes. The charger was a normal battery charger that I connected under the hood). I downloaded ProTools and connected it and found some errors but then I did a system restart (i can't remember exactly what it was called) and after that the car is totally dead. I was pretty sure the battery was low and maybe that was the issue. When i put a multimeter on the battery i only get around 4.5 volts. I then bought a CTEK MXS 5.0 trickle charger and that was going but it started to rain yesterday and my wife on her own unplugged it in stage 2. It ran for about 4 hours and the volts on the battery stayed exactly the same at 4.5 volts. I bought a new battery but I can't get into the trunk. Even if i jump the car for 20 minutes nothing happens. No power, lights, console, nothing!:confused2 I wanted to check with you guys before I took it in. I never used ProTools before. I had been in the car a lot with it turned off since the problem started so I'm sure the battery was very low plus its as old as the car as well so I'm sure it needs to be replaced. Also can i put it into neutral in the compartment under the gear shifter or do i need to go under the car? Thanks so much for the help.
