Thank you, Upt'North. Where would you recommend geting a good replacement?

HI Guys, I love my 1 series but it started to lose power and after a few weeks started to make a rattling noise. I called the RAC who said it might be a timing chain and they towed it to a garage. The garage has given me the option of putting in a new engine (£1500) or stripping down the engine and fitting a new timing chain. But they say other things could have gone wrong and might need fixing and it will cost to find out. My question is...... What could have gone wrong and what would be the cheapest way to fix the car?
