  1. New DVD arrived today and it works like a dream. Never been a fan of using brushes on lasers. Cheers, Simon
  2. Hi Trevor, Spoke to the bloke I bought it from and did a bit of Googling around. It turns out that I have the "business" version of the Sat Nav, which is as I feared - Same reader for CDs and the Sat Nav DVD. It appears that the DVD must be knackered. I've ordered a replacement and I'll let you know if that does the trick. Should help out any others that may have the same problem. Cheers, Simon
  3. Good afternoon all, Bought my first ever BMW two days ago and I've already fallen in love with it. Can't believe I wasted so much time before "getting with the program". It's an E90, 2008, 318i. M-sport trim and has been incredibly well looked after, can't believe how lucky I got with this find. I'm up in the North East, 35 years old, chemist by education and manufacturing engineer by trade (run my own little business). So I'm not a mechanic, but also not clueless and will help out wherever I can as appropriate on other people's questions. Mine will mostly be about the nuances of BMWs in particular. Though they do seem well designed and logical beasts so shouldn't be much to ask. Couple of photos of the new lady.................... ATB, Simon
  4. Crikey! A flame thrower by the looks!
  5. Hi Trevor, Thanks for the welcome. I have had a good shufty around in the boot and I can't find anything. Here's what I did find (so you can see I did actually look and maybe tell me where I didn't look hard enough); a jack in the roof of the boot on the left, a tool kit under a panel on the right hand side, next to the first aid kit, with locking wheel nut and all that jazz, that full panel comes out to access the rear lights, a cubby hole under the carpet with a plastic bin insert and something else on the left hand side that my brain has already ejected from my short term memory. No sign of anywhere to put a DVD........................... Surely the CD player and Sat Nav DVD are separate. Seems a bad design flaw (surely not, it's German!) to only be able to access the map or listen to my Aqua Albums mutually exclusively! What the heck am I missing here? Cheers, Simon
  6. Good afternoon everyone, I just bought an E90 (2008) 318i from a private seller. My first ever BMW and I can't believe what I've been missing out on for all these years! Absolutely love it! The Sat Nav DVD was in the glove box (2012 version, OEM). I put it into the only drive I could find (in the normal CD player place on the radio) and it won't read the disc. It happily reads music CDs so the CD laser is at least in working order. Is this a shared DVD and CD player? Or is there a different DVD player in the boot or somewhere I'm missing? I've had a look and couldn't see one, but I could be overlooking something obvious. Or is it likely just that the DVD laser or DVD itself is "knackered"? Any advice on how to diagnose and fix the problem is very much appreciated. Cheers, Simon
