I had a quick look on google and came back with U57 May want to double check it though :) -
Seems like a reasonable price to me. With any car you always run the risk of something expensive going wrong but it's just pot luck sometimes. A well maintained BMW should be as good as anything! :)

I would have thought you would have heard a really bad sounding noise whist driving/starting if it was the timing chain? Could be some kind of immobiliser issue? -
