I have recently purchased a BMW 5 Series that came with personalised number plates: X5 DCE
Given that my car is not an X5, nor are any of my initials D, C or E, I thought I would offer it for sale. Although it has been listed with a couple of specialist websites I thought I would also offer it directly to X5 owners (saving you sales commission and VAT at least).
Transferring their ownership to you is easily done directly (DVLA advice page: https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/keep-or-assign).
