The first ever all-electric BMW i4 has been designed and built to be The Ultimate Driving Machine in the age of electric mobility
Representing BMW Group's first purely electrically powered model for the premium mid-range, the BMW i4 is not limited to exceptional driving dynamics, elegant design, spacious comfort and intuitive functionality, as it will also add locally emissions-free mobility to its concept of driving pleasure.
At the heart of the new BMW i4 is the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. Combined with the latest innovations in the field of battery cells, it achieves a range of approximately 375 miles. This technology will be pioneered in the BMW iX3 – to be produced from 2020 onwards – and then used in the BMW iNEXT and the BMW i4 from 2021 onwards.
The drive technology of the BMW i4 sets new standards in terms of power density, efficiency and range in locally emissions-free driving. The electric motor delivers a maximum output of around 530 hp, which is the same as a V8 engine found in current BMW models with a combustion engine.
The BMW eDrive also includes a newly designed high-voltage battery featuring the latest battery cell technology, which can be charged to about 80 per cent capacity in around 35 minutes. This translates to a charging time of around six minutes for a range of 62 miles.
Manufactured at the company's main plant in Munich, BMW i's first Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 62mph in around 4 seconds, achieving a top speed of more than 124mph.
From a design perspective, the BMW i4 combines the dynamic proportions of a 4-door coupé with typical aerodynamic and eco-friendly BMW i design features. The interior has also been optimised to ensure that both day-to-day trips and long-distance travel are not just doable but enjoyable. As such, the BMW i4 can be clearly identified as a BMW Gran Coupé – and equally clearly as an electrically powered vehicle.
MODULAR AND FLEXIBLE DESIGN.
Thanks to a highly integrated drive system, the BMW i4’s electric motor, transmission and power electronics are in a single housing. This allows a significant increase in power density as well as a reduction in weight. What’s more, the next generation charging unit is a smaller and more uniform package, making it suitable for all future vehicles, from plug-in hybrids to all-electric models.
DRIVING ELECTRIC MOBILITY.
The development of the BMW i4 is part of a comprehensive product offensive by the BMW Group in the field of models with electrified drive. The company currently has the biggest range of all-electric and plug-in hybrid models within the competitive field. By 2023, the BMW Group will have 25 models with electrified drive.
