Squealing / Whistling noise at high rpms

Featured Replies

Hi to whoever may see this,

I have had an issue with my car for the last year since buying it. I thought it went away in March/ April time after I had major engine work (timing chain, clutch dmf and turbo) but it has come back recently - or maybe my hearing is rubbish.

I’m getting a high pitched squealing / whisting noise above 2.5-3k rpms. See video below.

This only occurs when I am flooring it and will stop the second I let off the accelerator, this happens in neutral aswell but not constant like in the video, and speed does not affect this.

I original thought this may be my serpentine belt as it had never been changed and had the October 2015 manufacture date on it, so I have replaced the belt, belt tensioner and guide pulley.

This did not solve the issue.

I don’t think it may be a boost leak as the car boosts fine and doesn’t feel like it has lost or is losing any performance.

Any ideas?

Morning James

Maybe my hearing but I cant tell anything from the Video

If you have changed the serpentine belt guide pulley's and tensioner did you check the Alternator pulley, water pump and aircon pulley ? Try spraying them with WD40 see if it quiets it down ?

Hi Dave,

I will give it a go tomorrow. If anything I suspect the alternator pulley or water pump if it is one of the auxiliary pulleys as there is no difference with the ac on or off.

Going to be investigating for a possible boost leak, as the car is quite airy under boost, may just be normal for these engines though 😅.And also a few over things to go over aswell will let you know how it goes!

James

Might be worth using a long screwdriver as a stethascope and listening to the rotating parts directly for excess noise.
