oil leaks

I have a 2016 535xi with 93K miles and have had a series of oil leaks that are plaguing my car. I have replaced the valve cover gaskets and am now being told that the oil filter canister is leaking (apparently a common problem) and now the turbo is leaking. the turbo is a very expensive repair. For a car with less than 100k miles this seems extreme.

Has anyone else experienced these problems?

Morning Bob

My theory on oil leaks as well as other failures revolve around the extended service intervals that began to appear in the 90's. My guess is your car has a full history but on a low mileage car that could possibly mean almost 2 years between inspections?

Clearly something small and simple to fix can escalate in that time

90% of leaks just require replacement of seals or gaskets or sometimes a pipe, I don't know what your Turbo leak is? oil or pressure but I would talk to a turbo specialist again it may be just a seal.

If you are not able to fix these issues your self then find a good local garage or best a BMW specialist near you they will help at a more manageable cost than a BMW Main Agent. Talk to them about a prioritised program rather than try and do it all in one hit.

Hope this helps

These repairs are beyond my ability to perform and are quite expensive even with my local mechanic, especially the turbo repair. Not sure what I am going to do at this point as investing more money into repairs might not be a good investment. I am just disappointed with the extent of the oil leaks in a car with less than 100K.

This car has been serviced regularly between dealer (water pump, air conditioning, wiring harness when mice got into engine compartment and damaged wiring) and local mechanic (oil changes, brakes, tires, valve cover gaskets, etc.) so while mileage is low it has been serviced consistently.

Seems you have done your best for the car so at a loss as not seeing what is occurring makes all comment general rather than specific.

I would make the point that my brother inlaw is now on his 5th 5 series touring 2 x 530d 2x 535d and the current 540d xDrive all his cars have run to 200k+ (he does a lot of travel in the EU) before trade in. The early cars had swirl flap and EGR issues. All cars are BMW serviced plus interim on my drive any signs of leaks we have addressed straight away.

Good Luck

Dave
