X3 2.0 Diesel bad MPG

Hi there,

I have just bought a 2009 X3 2.0 D and I am only getting 23 - 27mpg I am extremely surprised at this as K used to get 35-40mpg driving locally in my Audi A5 3.0 TDi

I believe I should be getting 40-45mpg. Previous owner has fitted 19" wheels so not sure if this may be contributing, but i'm fairly sure they can't be the complete problem Any ideas please or I think I am going to have to sell it which would be a shame as I like driving it!

Hi Nigel

Welcome to the Forum

I am surprised that your mpg is that low we have friends who have a 2010 X3 same engine and they return 27/28 around town mid to high 40's on a run

When was it last serviced? Are the brakes all free nothing binding? 19" wheels shouldn't make much difference apart from ride quality due to the lower profile tyres. Are the tyres correctly inflated ?

Your Audi A6 was it Quattro as one of our sons ran an A6 Allroad 3.0 tdi and he only ever saw 40mpg on the motorway he loved it but sadly it broke a lot

23 mpg sounds very wrong. Id be looking into that. As Greydog was leaning towards, i'd get a good service done on it. Be sure to do the diesel filter too as this tends to get overlooked. Does it freewheel well? Bring it for a good long drive on the motorway before the service to blow off the dust.
