Hi all,

I have owned my 420D convertible for almost two years now and I am really pleased with her combination of performance and economy. However, two months ago I had trouble lowering the rear nearside window - it would not glide down smoothly but only operated in repeated pressing of the window winder button. Even when fully down I found the retractable roof would not fully open. My local BMW specialist garage advised that the problem was that the window winder mechanism on the nearside had failed due to being 'wetted-out' by water ingress to the sill from normal rainfall/washing. Apparently the sill does not have a means of draining away on the 4 Series convertible and eventually it 'floods' the window winder mechanism which sits in this area. My garage stated that this is a common problem on the convertible and they have rectified many of these cars by making a simple drain themselves. I paid £600 for the new winder and labour so was not happy but imagine my horror to experience the offside 'fail' as well !

I have now paid out @£1200 to deal with a 'common knowledge' issue that should have been subject of a simple recall to rectify.

I have started an investigation with BMW UK and my local BMW Stratstone dealer to investigate this issue with a view to receiving some recompence for an obvious design fault.

My question is, are there any other people/garages 'out there' who have experienced this issue with the 4 Series convertible so that we may form a group to petition BMW for financial retribution ? (I have noted several comments/pictures/videos on Google and Youtube so I know I am not the only one !!).

Please feel free to contact me via this post or via my email at julianpasiut2007@gmail.com

	Thank you !!!

	Good evening all,

looking at going to Belgium next week for a night away.

Cant see anything in handbook (online or in I drive) regarding driving on the continent that is relevant.

It mentions turning off Auto setting and adjust setting in Idrive “settings - lighting - headlights - headlight adaptation” however mine doesn’t have this option to select/change, not does it have adaptive LED lights, just LED’s.

Had a look on the rear of the lamps, nothing obvious to swap over (have seen a lever on other models)

	Any ideas please?

Worst case I’ll sling some beam deflectors on.

Hi. I am feeling really foolish but I am having a hard time finding the correct bolt for the negative. Is someone able to provide photos for me? I have looked at the manual and that is not very clear and have spent way too much time on the internet searching. I am hoping someone here can help quickly.

I custom ordered my dream car in 2014 and it only has 20,000 miles on it. I love it but I do not drive it near enough and now lost with a dead battery!

Yesterday as I was going thru a car wash in my M440, one of the spinning brushes snagged my driver side mirror and pulled of the mirror cover piece. It was flopping around in the spraying water, held on by only a wire lead. Later, in the wind tunnel section, I actually lowered the window, put my arm out and held on to it. Otherwise I think the winds would have finished pulling it off. I had the mirrors in the folded back position and I think the problem is related to the mirror design, as it has a projecting "fin" which, when the mirrors are folded back, is sticking straight forward, making them easy to snag. Anyone here relate to this, or have any recommendations. This time it didn't do any damage, no paint scratches, and the cover simply snapped back on, but it makes me nervous about future occurrences.

Any one know of any aftermarket mirror of a different design, as I would consider a change out.

My home is in eastern Texas, so we get very little icy/snow driving events compared to many of you. However, I have been driving 4 WD drive trucks for decades as my personal work truck in my construction business. Not for street needs, but there are occasions that a jobsite may be muddy, sandy, or just soft dirt. And at these times, especially if I am pulling a trailer with a ditching machine or scissor lift, 4 WD makes a large difference. And, when the occasional harsh winter comes along, with a few days of ice or snow covered roads, the trips to supermarkets or other errands are no problem.

So that leads to my question here. I recently bought a 2025 M440 XDrive. AWD drive systems can be designed mainly for enhanced road handling on a track for instance, or more for low traction conditions. For any of you who may have a non SUV AWD BMW, and stock tires, how do they handle in snow or ice? In normal daily driving, is enough torque sent to the front wheels to be a real benefit over just rear wheel drive?

I hope some here can share you experiences/thoughts.

	Morning all,

So my car started making a scraping sound under the centre console when accelerating hard,

Ive found on another forum a video with the exact sound I’m experiencing. Turns out it’s due to the handbrake cable clips above the fuel tank breaking and the hand brake cables rub on the prop shaft.

Has anyone got any experience with renewing these? Apparently the tank needs to be dropped.

People have said that cable ties work well as a cheap alternative.

I’d normally climb underneath, play and report my findings, but I’m recovering from an operation at the moment so cannot get underneath for a few weeks. 😕

Do you think it’s worth it or is there any way you can strengthen the engine for the tune?

	Good morning all,

So, having had my car for a little over 6 months I decided to give the transmission an overdue service.

Parts obtained from Autodoc for £205 for ZF service kit, a fill plug & mechatronic sleeve (Just in case)
Job wasn't that bad to do. I even found the source of an intermittant rattle from un undershield.

Once done I cleared the adaptions & drove up the road, instantly the shifts were noticeably smoother, not that they were too bad before, just slightly less refined.

ZF recommend it to be done at 60K I believe, my car has covered 79K miles. I might do just a fluid flush at 100K miles, we'll see...

I was recommended by a friend, who had his E90 updated a while ago.

I had messaged Chris at precision drive about getting my F36 updated & addition of CarPlay. He replied with the cost & answered any queries I had.

Dropped off car & left it with him.

I got a call after 1.5hrs to say the whole car had been updated but there was an issue whilst installing CarPlay (he doesn’t yet have dedicated broadband at his workshop, phone tethering wasn’t sufficient)

He has kindly offered to come to my house & apply the CarPlay at a later date.

It turns out that my cars never had any software updates applied since new!

Instantly I noticed the shifts were smoother & engine was quieter.

Should anyone else require their cars updating give Chris a message/call (search Precision Drive)

I paid £120 for whole vehicle update, £60 to be paid at a later date for CarPlay activation.
